Did you know that Dean in our class shares his birthday with Dr.Seuss? We think that is pretty neat! This week we have done a few Dr.Seuss inspired addition activities with the book One Fish Two Fish, Red Fish Blue Fish, with Miss Mackenzie and some fish crackers - although we were not allowed to eat them! We also made lists of /at/ and /ip/ rhyming words. We want to be able to rhyme just like Dr. Seuss. You never know, on Monday we might find some wockets in our pockets...
Over the past two weeks we have completed a class inquiry about our solar system! Together we made a model by painting foam spheres and hanging them,in orbit, from our ceiling. We have drawn our own diagrams of the solar system and learnt new information about each planet. Do you know which planets are known as the "gas giants"? We do! We kept track of our learning on a large chart and wrote on post-its every time we learnt a new fact. Some of us wrote about our favourite planet. This writing in hanging up in the hallway outside of our classroom. Don't forget to ask us about our favourite planet? Some of us made rockets using tanagrams (various two-dimensional shapes) by tracing and colouring our design on paper. At our art centre, many of us painted diagrams of our favourite planets. Using marshmellows and toothpicks, we made our own constellations. Our learning was out of this world! Last Friday Ms. Mayor read the story, "Have You Filled Your Bucket Today?" This week we have discussing how we can all be bucket "fillers" (e.g., smiling, using our manners) and bucket "dippers" (e.g., hitting, not including friends in our games). Along with WITS, we will be using the concept of filling and dipping our invisible buckets to help our students be kind toward one another, make good choices, and problem solve with their peers. Using both strategies, it is our goal to have our students become more empathetic towards each other. On Thursday, February 6, we will be having sweater day! We will be wearing extra warm and cozy sweaters so that we can turn down the heat in the school to save a little energy and do our part to take care of God's creation during our winter months. Make sure your child dresses a little extra warmer that day by wearing layers, or by bringing an extra hoodie to wear.
In the past few days, we have had a lot of questions about Valentine Cards... Yes, if your child chooses to do so, we will be exchanging cards on Friday, February 14th. Please make sure your child comes to school with 26 cards autographed with his/her name. We APPRECIATE if you DO NOT have your child personally address each card - it takes too much time to hand out if the cards are addressed! As well, no child feels left out or upset if he/she does not get a card. Please remember to not send treats to school to share on that day due to allergies. We will be making some special treats to have in class that day that are allergy safe.
